The diurnal activity and its seasonal variations of Drosophila nigromaculata were observed in the University Botanical Garden, Sapporo. Collections were made by three banana traps on three successive days at the end of each month, ranging from May to October in 1956. A total of 3760 spocimens belonging to 22 species of the genus Drosophila were obtained. Among them, 844 specimens were represented by D. nigromaculata (Table 1). The diurnal activity of this species showed a bimodal feature in each month except October (Fig. 1), and the feature showed variations from month to month. It is possible that such variations are due, on the one hand, to the climatic difference, and on the other hand to the frequency difference of other species occuring in the same population. The diurnal activity of D. nigromaculata and D. auraria was found to be bimodal even under the cloudy condition, so far observed in the Botonical Garden. In the thick forest in Shidzunai, however, D. auraria did not show bimodal activity on the cloudy day, though the condition in light, temperature, humidity and wind was similar between Shidzunai and the Botanical Garden (Fig. 2).
