1. A conditioned reflex was establised to the aroma of the aromatic, hydroxycitronellal, which was an indifferent stimulus, using as the unconditioned reflex the proboscis extension reaction to sucrose (1.5M) stimulus on the tarsi in the honey bee, Apis mellifica. 2. Experimental extinction occurred clearly after the non-reinforcements of 10 or more times (protocols 1, 2). In the process, disinhibition was seen (protocols 1;2, No. 3). The extinction was temporary as in mammals, and spontaneous recovery was seen on the following day (protocol 2, No. 3). 3. In the bees, in which the conditioned reflex had been established, generalization occurred after a certain period of time different in individuals to p-isopropyl-α-methylhydrocinnamic aldehyde (protocol 3), smell of which was similar for us to the conditioned stimulus. However, no generalization occurred to citral (protocols 1, 3, 4). 4. In the bees in which the generalization had been ascertained, stable differentiation occurred clearly after the alternative repetitions of reinforcements by either one of the stimuli and non-reinforcements by the other which were performed five times for each. Although it was ascertained that the differenetiation was pseserved for one hour, it was not retained until the following day (protocol 4), which indicated that the differentiation was also temporary. 5. From the results obtained, it is thought that the experimental extinction and the differentiation occur due to internal inhibition in the honey bee.
