The present survey was carried out during a period from April to November, 1955, with regard to the distribution and seasonal change of Paramecium in the city of Sapporo. The specimens were collected at random by collecting water, 50 to 100cc in volume, with a glass pipette. Four species of Paramecium were collected: they are P. caudatum, P. bursaria, P. aurelia and P. polycaryum. All the species seem to have a definite adaptability to thier inhabiting environmental conditions: P. bursaria inhabits the clear pond water, P. polycaryum lives in foul water containing organic substances, P. caudatum adapts itself to either clear or dirty waters, and P. aureria is founf in stagnant water containing hay infusion. The seasonal variation in occurrence was observed in P. bursaria, P. polycaryum and P. aurelia. The results are shown in Figure 1. P. bursaria was found from the first decade of May to the middle of June, and then showed a sudden disappearance in collection. A similar pattern was observed in P. polycaryum. They were collected again during from the latter part of September to the beginning of October. P. aurelia was found from the end of August to November, but the present observations are rather insufficient to make any statement on its seasonal change. P. caudatum seems to be the most predominant speices being abundant at any time. So far as the results of observations of P. polycaryum show, the temperature of water in which the animals are living seems to be one of the environmental factors which cause the seasonal variation (Fig. 2).
