The effect of uranyl nitrate on fertilization was observed, especially in the eggs of Urechis unicinctus and partly of Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus. The concentration of uranyl nitrate used was 5×10^<-4>M sea water solution in most cases. The observation gave the following results. (1) The formation of fertilization membrane in Urechis eggs is inhibited by uranyl nitrate, and the inhibition seems to be reversible. (2) The membrane formation takes place normally in the eggs transferred into uranyl nitrate solution after 4 minutes from insemination in sea water, whereas the membrane is formed incompletely in the eggs transferred within 3 minutes. So the changes in cortical layer, which cause membrane formation, seem to be completed within about 3 minutes after insemination. (3) The mechanism of monospermy in the fertilized eggs is inhibited by uranyl nitrate, polyspermy increasing. (4) The mechanism of monospermy is also inhibited by the insemination using the sperm treated with uranyl nitrate, polyspermy increasing also.
