The resting membrane potential and the injury potential were studied by a method of extracellular electrodes on the single muscle fibre isolated from hind legs of the following frogs, Rana japonica, R. temporaria, and R. nigromaculata. The results were compared with those obtained by the method of intracellular microelectrode: there were many points of agreement between them. Further, it was clearly shown that the so-called "injury potential" (E_i) is an algebraic sum of the membrane potential (E_m) in the normal portion of muscle fibre and the junction potential (E_j) between the Ringer's solution and sarcoplasm in the injured portion. The outside potential is positive to the inside one in both normal and injured portion. This is formulated as follows: E_i=E_m+E_j where E_i=56(1±0.1)mV, E_m=84(1±0.1)mV, and E_j=-28(1±0.1)mV.
