The present investigations were undertaken in order to explain the manner of the decrease in volume of the liver of fasting animals. The decrease in volume of the liver of fasting horses was analysed from the standpoints of the changes in volume of hepatic lobe, in number of liver cells and in volume of liver cells. Observation have revealed the following facts: (1) The marked decrease in volume of hepatic lobe was clearly observed in process of starvation. (2) The liver cells in hepatic lobe decrease in number in the course of starvation. (3) A progressive decrease in volume of liver cells appeared in progress of fasting. (4) The observations on the fat distribution in the liver cells by Sudan III-staining show that the fat droplets in the cells diminish with fasting days and then disappear in the severe starvation.
