1) The effect of pH and of salinity of sea water upon the thickness of the adhesive layer of the unfertilized ripe eggs of the flounder, Limanda schrenki Schmidt, was studied. 2) The layer gradually swells up with increase of pH in sea water until it reaches the maximum thickness at pH8.0. At higher pH values, the layer ceases to change in thickness. 3) In the 1/<10> diluted sea water, the layer remains unchanged. But when the concentration is increased or decreased, the layer always becomes swelled.
