1. Coaction between the wild type and the mutant "white" of Drosophila melanogaster was carefully studied. Cultivation was carried on with the small glass tubes (diameter 1.8cm, height 9cm), containing 3cc of Pearl's artificial food at 25℃, and number of larvae per tube was varied from 2^1 to 2^9, half of which was of different type. As indicator of viability, emergence ratio was cited. 2. In both cases when the two types were transferred together and each type was transferred separately, the higher the density of larvae was, the less the emergence ratio became. 3. When both wild type and "white" are incubated in the same tube, emergence ratio of "white" is less than that of wild type, if culture density is less than 128 per tube, but greater if culture density is greater than 256. 4. Emergence ratio of "white" is greater than that of wild type under the condition of high density and less under the condition of low density when each strain is cultured separately. 5. There are such relationships as mentioned in the follows, between emergence ratio of two types when cultured in mixture and that when cultured separately. (a) In the case of wild type, when density is low, emergence ratio of mixed culture is greater than that of separate culture, and when density is high, the opposite tendency has been the result. (b) In the case of "white" when density is low, emergence ratio of separate culture is greater than that of mixed culture, and when density is high opposite result was observed. It is clear therefore from the results mentioned above that coactive pressure between wild type and "white" changes according to the changes of culture density. 6. It has been thought that "white" is less viable than wild type, but from the results obtained by the author, it is clear that coaction between "white" and wild type depends upon culture condition, so wild type is not always more viable than "white".
