Makino (1951, 1952) has made it clear in the YOSHIDA sarcoma that there is a strain of tumor cells which primarily participate in the growth of tumor and contain a characteristic chromosome constitution. Icc of 0.25M and 0.5M solutions of CaCl_2, 0.125M solution of AlCl_3 and 2% A_2O_2 solution were injected in the peritoneal cavities of the animls bearing the YOSHIDA sarcoma. In every case of these treatments, the majorty of tumor cells underwent destruction, but a part of tumor cells has remained unaffected. They are characterized by a small amount of cytoplasm and a compact nucleus. After a few hours of treatment, these cells begin to divide. Almost all of these dividing cells showed well-balanced subdiploid chromosomes, 40 or thereabouts in number and contain a peculiar chromosome constitution characteristic of the YOSHIDA sarcoma. The growth of the tumor is attributable to these cells. The evidence thus indicates that the unaffected cells are no other than the strain cells.
