Experiments have been carried out to investigate the action of x-rays on the development of toad eggs. Before fertilization, sperm and eggs were exposed to x-rays for 1, 2, 4 and 8 minutes. Intensity was 250 roentgen per minute. After treatment three combinations of gametes were arranged (1) irradiated sperm and normal eggs; (2) normal sperm and irradiated eggs; (3) irradiated sperm and irradiated eggs. Fertilizd eggs were also irradiated 0, 3 and 5 hours after insemination. when control eggs reach to the stage of neurula, experimental embryos are examined and they are classified into 3 types (see foot-note of Table I) according to the degree of abnormalities during gastrulation. The results are given in Tables and shown in figures. Judging from these results, it is pointed out that (1) eggs are more susceptible to x-rays than sperm as far as abnormalities during gastrulation are taken into account, that (2) the lots of irradiation to both eggs and sperm show the same results as the lots in which only eggs are treated, and that (3) the irradiation effects are a function of the time of exposure. It is shown also that three groups of irradiation experiments before fertilization present the same feature in the cerrelation between the percentages of total number of abnormal embryos to all irradiated embryos and that of the number of Type I to number of abnormal embryos, i. e., in these cases, increase of total number of abnormal embryos according to dosages is owing mainly to the increase of the number of Type I. Contrary, when metarials are treated after fertilization, the increase of total number of abnormal embryos is due mainly to the increase of the number of the Type II till the percentage of the number of total abnormals reach to 100%.
