1) As in the case of Rana nigromaculata nigromaculata, the glandular cells of the dorsal gland of the present species are derived from the neural crest in the stage of late neurula bearing the neural groove not yet closed. The glaudular area, containing about 100 glandular cells, is Y-shaped, namely, the main median division, occupying the mid-dorsal portion of the embryo from the epiphyseal region to the middle of the trunk, gives off at its anterior extremity two short branches towards the nasal pits. The glandular cells which begin to secrete soon after closure of the neural groove are in the prime of activity before the occurrence of hatching and seem to play an important role in softening the egg membranes. The glandular cells persist in the tadpole and continue to secrete but begin to degenerate suddenly in the late external-gill stage when the yolk has been almost completely absorbed. 2) The dorsal gland of the present frog is a rather poorly developed lone. But : contrary to the statements of the former authors, the embryos hatch into tadpoles earlier than those of other anurans with better developed dorsal gland. The chorion, the so-called vitelline membrane, is pushed open by embryo, generally by repeated wriggling movements, and the embryo glides slowly out of the egg membranes by means of the epidermal cilia. It is not seldom, however, that the epidermal cilia are solely responsible for the whole process of hatching.
