During the summer time in 1949, the ho se rats were collected with the planned trapping in a certain area of the city of Sapporo. Inside of the house the roof rat, Rattus rattus rattus, and the Norway rat, Ratus norvegicus norvegicus, were caught with the same rate. In the kitchens the Norway rat was trapped greater in number than the roof rat. Outside of the house the roof rat was obtained rarely while the majority of the rats caught was the Norway rat. The Norway rat seemed to be sensitive to the kind of the trap, because by the cage living trap it was caught far greater in number than by the snap trap. However, this was not a case for th roof rat.
