Mitochondria can be stained by Sudan III in cells of every tissue, which has been finely cut and smeared on a cover glass and fixed in 20% formalin. They can also be stained by nile blue or neutral red or blackened by osmic acid without being immersed in alcohol. Their stainability by Sudan III does not easily change in various experimental conditions imposed upon the cell.
