In 1897, Takakura described Malacobdella japonica as a separate one from the European species, M. grossa, in the possession of the shorter rhynchocoelom and the acetabular commissure instead of the anal one, and in the complicated anastomosis of the blood vessels. Afterwards, O. Riepen (1933) studied the European species in detail and pointed out that the Japanese species is nothing but a geographical variety of the former from the following points; 1) the circulatory system of M. grossa shows a great deal of individual variations according to habitats, hosts, and stages of growth, and moreover the anastomosis of the blood vessels resembling that of M. japonica was often reported in M. grossa by several authors, and 2) the nerves running along the posterior margin of the sucker of M. grossa may correspond to the acetabular commissure of M. japonica. The present authors studied on M. japonica which is very commonly found in the mantle cavity of Spisula sachalinensis in the neighbourhood of the Akkeshi Marine Biological Station, came to the conclusion that M. japonica is distinguishable from M. grossa in the following features: 1) the rhynchocoelom extends into the anterior two-thirds of the body, 2) in the anal region of M. japonica there is found only a strong acetabular, whereas in M. grossa the anal and other commissures are observable there, 3) the intestine shows more than ten windings and 4) the external openings of the efferent nephridial ducts are situated on the dorso-lateral side of the body. The circulatory system, which was considered by Takakura as an important specific character, shows a great deal of individual variations in the Japanese species.
