The present paper deals with the Muridae-fauna in the highlands of Central Japan and with some ecological observations about it. The specimens obtained since August 1936 are included into two subfamilies, five genera and seven species and subspecies as follow: 1.Microtus montebelli(MILNE-EDWARDS) The present species is very common in parts of Gentral Japan (12 ♂♂ and 8 ♀♀). It can be found in almost all the places including farm, paddy-field, river bank, flood plane, forest, plataeu and even in the wild field of volcanic sand (e.g. foot of Mt. Fuji). It has also very wide vertical distribution. 2.Clethrionomys rufocanus smithii (THOMAS) This interesting species was obtained from Aruga (alt. 900m) near Lake Suwa, Nagano-Ken (4 ♂♂ and 7 ♀♀). HINTON(1926) classified all the Clethrionomys rufocanus group from Japan (including Hokkaido) into one Clethrionomys rufocanus smithii, considering that they are nothing more than ones of different developmental stages. But KURODA (9;) has separated bedfordiae found in Hokkaido from niigatae and deduced the same result in smithii and andersoni. From my close observations on the present specimens, smithii should be separated from bedfordiae in Hokkaido and Saghalin, because in smithii, the body is moderately smaller, (especially the hind foot being short), the skull is very weakly built and the cheek-teeth are rootless with more rounded salient angles in comparison with bedfordiae of even adult stages. At any rate, we could not find any specimens which were strictly identical with bedfordiae from Hondo. Clethrionomys rufocanus andersoni should be the synonym of smithii, because, according to THOMAS, the skull of andersoni closely resembles that of smithii; and moreover I have the chestnut one of smithii in my collections, which has similar colour to that of andersoni. Therefore, I consider that andersoni is an older form of smithii. Other species of the genus from Hondo, i. e. niigatae and okiensis are closely related to smithii but they differ from it in the length of tail, the former being longer and the latter is shorter than that of smithii. Rather rare in Central Japan, being collected in bush or bamboo grass on the mountain. 3.Apodemus geisha geisha (THOMAS) This pretty little mouse is not uncommon in forest of Central Japan; obtained 12 ♂♂ and 10 ♀♀ from various places. 4.Apodemus speciosus speciosus (TEMMINCK et SCHLEGEL) This beautiful mouse is very common in fields and woods, collected 19 ♂♂ and 2 ♀♀ in all. 5.Rattus ratius alexandrinus (GEOFFROY) Very common as house rat. 6.Rattus norvegicus norvegicus (ERXLEBEN) Very abundant in the environs of houses. 7.Mus molossinus molossinus (TEMMINCK et SCHLEGEL) Only two specimens (1 ♂ and 1 ♀) were collected from Yamanashi-Ken, but this species seems not so uncommon in the farms of Central Japan.
