The fry of the salmon, Oncorhynchus keta (WALBAUM) were released from the hatchery directly into sea water soon after the yolk had been absorbed. In the first series of the experiment which lasted for 4 days, the loss either in fresh water or in sea water was less then 2.5%. In the second series which lasted for 2 months, the loss within a month was 1.6% in sea water, while it showed 1.0% in fresh water. After 2 months the loss in fresh water attained 13% while in sea water only 3.5%. The longer the fry remain in sea water the better the result as compared with those remaining in fresh water. Generally there occurred no marked difference in the growth between the young in fresh water and those released into sea water. From these experiments it becomes clear that young salmon nay be released directly into sea water without any harmful results.
