Some emendations of the diagnosis of the genus Lumbriculus are necessary in view of the characters noted in the Japanese species and recently reported by the writer (1936). The diagnosis, modified from those of SMITH & WELCH (1919) and of STEPHENSON (1930), is as follows:- Prostomium rounded, its length slightly larger than its basal width. Setae cleft at their distal ends. Male pores. usually one pair, on segments VIII, X or XI. Female pores, usually one or two pairs. situated intersegmentally just one or two segments posterior to that bearing the male pores. Spermathecal pores paired, often asymmetrical, commonly situated in three to six segments posterior to that bearing the male pores and located between the lateral line and the ventral setae line. Contractile, transverse caecal vessels, most of which are provided with several caecal branches, present in all segments except the few anterior ones. Dorso-ventral commissure vessels present only in some of the anterior segments. Atria pear-shaped, with a protrusibel penis, usually one pair corresponding to the male pores, in segments VIII, X or XI. Testes and male funnels one or two pairs, situated in the atrial segment, or the atrial segment and the segment just anterior to it. Ovaries and oviducal funnels usually one or two pairs, located in one or two segments just behind the atrial segment. Spermathecae commonly three to six pairs, often asymmetrical, usually situated in three to six segments posterior to the atrial segment. In the genus are included three species, L. variegatus (MULL.), L. inconstans (SMITH) and L. japonicus YAMAGUCHI. The first species is known to be distributed in Europe, North America and Asia, wile the second species has been recorded only from North America. The third species was collected in Japan (Hokkaido) by the writer. These species differ in several respects and also show variations within their own limits. It is a well-known fact that sexually mature individuals of L. variegatus and L. inconstans are very rarely found, but sexually mature specimens of L. japonics are very common in Sapporo especially from the middle of April to the end of June.
