The chromosome studies of the formosan hare, Lepus formosus, and of the rabbit, Lepus cuniculus, are briefly summed up here. The chromosomal formulae are shown in the following table. table As will be seen in the above table, the chromosome number of Lepus formosus in fortyeight in diploid, while the number of L.cuniculus is less by four than the former. When these are placed in serial alignments and compared with each other, we find not only there are such numerical differences, but also some morphological dissimilarities between the chromosomes of these two species although externally alike. According to the above mentioned facts, it is most likely that the phylogenetical relationships of the chromosomes between the hares and rabbits are not so closely related that their numerical and morphological differences can be explained merely by the interpretation of reciprocal variations of the V-shaped and rod-like chromosomes.
