A set of apparata for hydrogenation, filtration and evaporation was designed and constructed for this purpose. Conditions of hydrogenation were found to be as follows: solvent: ethyl alcohol; temperature of reaction: 60°-65℃; amount of Pt-black: 40-60% of the lipids taken; concentration of reaction fluid: 0.1-0.5%; duration of reaction: 2-3 hours. The hydro-products thus obtained show the iodine number of 2-10 depending upon the conditions. The amounts of hydro-product obtained from equal aliquots of the original extract agree with each other within the limit of 1-3%, 0.5-0.05g of lipids being treated. Some properties of the hydro-lipids are described. Fresh brain tissue of oxen was subjected to a fractional extraction after S.FRANKEL. The "alcohol" and petroleum ether fractions of the original extract were employed as the material. A modified method of HANUS for the determination of the iodine number of lipids is also given.
