In some insects of each family of the Sternorrhyncha, the body is much flattened and depressed. In these species the following modifications of the body structures are recognized: Widening of the body, simplication of the outline of body, fusion of the body segments, enlargement of the thorax, development of the setae or wax-pores arranged in a row along the body margin, appearance of a median suture on the dorsum, sclerotization of the dorsum, separation of the anal opening from the distal end of body, and reduction of the antennae, eyes, legs, rostrum, and the number of the abdominal spiracles.
