The discussions on the question of the encystment of lower organisms and the theories which attempt to explain this phenomenon may have to be revised because of the fact that the encystment or non-encystment of given organisms observed under a certain condition may not be reciprocated under another condition. By the usual method of isolation culture under ordinary laboratory conditions, Blepharisma undulans may encyst when well fed as STOLTE found on the one hand, and the same organism may continue to live years producing tens of thousands of generations without encystment as WOODRUFF observed on the other. But if the same organism is subjected to the seasonal temperature changes similar to that of nature, the functional behavior of the organism becomes quite different. B. undulans encysts when the minimum temperature drops somewhere around 17℃ or lower regardless of whether the organism is well or poorly fed.
