In case where any two of the second and third thoracic and first abdominal ganglia are cut off in full grown larva there appears immediately after the operation a symptom that the tonus of the skeletal muscles becomes noticeably lowered as a whole and consequently the animal remains limp-a thing which would be comparable to the hypotonia of the muscles in higher animals. The same symptom is also seen when those ganglia are put in total asphyxiation by cutting off the air supply from without through the spiracles I and IV into those parts of the body anterior to the first abdominal segment. Hence it follows that the nervec entre which controls the tonus of the whole skeletal muscles of the larva is located in those ganglia from the second thoracic to the first abdominal and that the function is fully manifested by their co-operation, at least by two of them. As compared with the ganglia in question, the second abdominal ganglion seems to have but a little bearing on controlling the muscular tonus.
