Artficial retinas have become an attractive device for fast visual input in optical character recognition (OCR) systems. OCRs designed for Chinese characters (Kanji) typicaly require a large amount of input to the recognition algorithm which leads to substantial computation time. However, our approach to Kanji recognition takes advantage of the artificial retina's projection mode which allows for the input image to be simultaneously projected along horizontal and vertical axes of the device in a fraction of the time required for a full video image. Projections require a relatively low number of inputs to the pattern recognition algorithm yet retain enough information to differentiate pattern.
