The present study was undertaken to elucidate the localization of the areas which produces pigment cells in the embryo of the newt Triturus pyrrhogater Pieces were isolated from various regions of the neural plate and fold of the neurulae (OYAMA'S St. 17), anveloped in pieces of abdomlnal epidermis in the same stage, and cultured in HOLTFREETER'S solution for nine days at constant temperature (22℃±1°). 8 The position of cuts by which explants were removed may be seen by referring Figure 1. The presence or absence of melanophores in the explants was taken as a criterion of whether or not the isolated area had possessed pigment cell-producing potency, and the potential grade was determined by the percentage of positive cases as well as by the number of melanophores developed in the explant. The results demonstrate that the pigment cell-producing potency of the present newt neurula is not restricted within the neural fold from which the pigment cells are normally derived, but extends to the median portion of the neural plate, though it is gradually diminished towards the median, as illustrated in Figure 2. As the development proceeds, however, the pigment cell-producing potency in the neural plate seems to be gradually diminished and finally lost, and thus the neural fold becomes a sole source of pigment cells.
