Orthopterans have been used by many investigators as experimental material in the study of meiosis since chromosomes in the testes of most species in this class are large in size. In the present study, reduction divisions were observed in the testis of a locust, Patanga japonica, obtained from a wintering population in Ehime prefecture. The chromosome number of a male was acertained to be 2n=23, including one sex chromosome (X). At the end of the first division, the chromosome number is reduced to half and produces two cells (n=11A+X and n=11A) of the dyad stage.
