Thirty-day old female rats of the Wistar strain were hypophysectomized. From the 7th day afger operation, the animals were given 5 daily subcutaneous injections of purified FSH (NIHFSH-S-1, 100μg daily), either singly or in combination with purified LH (NIH-LH-S-3, 10μg daily). Furthermore, some of the rats received daily injections of estrone (1μg daily) concurrently with gonadotrophins. Autopsies were performed 2 days after the last injection. Active follicular growth but no luteinization was induced to occur in the ovaries by injections of FSH alone nor of FSH plus estrone. In contrast, luteinization took place in the ovaries of recipients given injections of LH simultaneously with FSH or with FSH-estrone combinations Neither follicular growth nor luteinization occurred in the ovaries of noninjected hypophysectomized females. From these results, it seems likely that daily injections of physiological doses of estrogen hardly augment the potency of gonadotrophins to cause luteinization in ovaries of hypophysectomized rats.
