• For clarifying the breeding season, litter size and gestation period of the Riukiu Musk Shrew, Suncus murinus riukiuanus KURODA, 626 animals in total were entrapped in Nagasaki City and the suburbs during the year 1955 and 1960. There were 267 females among them. Observations were made on these famales, most of which were killed within a week after they were collected. Some females were kept alive nad mated with males. The results of these observations were as follows. 1) All the females which had ovaries with copora lutea were pregnant, except for three lactating females. This suggests that the ovulation in this species is induced by copulation. 2) The breeding of this species occurs all the year round. It is more active in the season from june to September than that in other months. The average number of foetuses is also larger in the active period. The female becomes mature and breeds in her first year when she is five months old or a little younger. 3) The average number of corpora lutea found in the ovaries of 59 females was 4.0. The number of tubal eggs in 22 females averaged 3.91. The most frequent number was four in both cases. 4) The mean number of embryos in 67 pregnant females was 3.67; the most frequent number was three. The litter size of 24 females which were kept in captivity averaged 3.21; the most frequent number was also three. 5) The gestation period was found to be 30 or 31 days. Lactation probably lasts for two weeks or a little longer.
