The inhibitory effect of NaF and antimycin A on the development of chick blastoderms cultured in vitro was analysed. A specific inhibition on the heart has been obtained by NaF treatment in the early stage blastoderm: The NaF-sensitive area corresponds to the bilateral prospective heart-forming-area in an embryo in the early primitive streak stage. Other tissues besides the heart show the same reaction to NaF treatment: every tissue has a critical sensitive period just before the onset of histogenesis. The said period seems to correspond to the stage of chemodifferentiation of the constituent cells. This view was first introduced by Spratt (1950), with whom the present author thoroughly agrees. In short, the effect of NaF is not organ specific but "differentiation process specific." The effect of antimycin A is different from that of NaF; the former has a general inhibitory action on the embryonic development. This finding supports the conclusion reached by McKenzie and Ebert (1960).
