(1963) Luciogobius albus (Syn. L. pallidus REGAN) is only one vertebreta which had been collected from subterranean waters of Japan. This blind gobioid fish is smaller than 100mm in total length, and unpigmented with subcuttaneous small eyes. The 14 specimens of this fish, ranging 28mm to 87mm in total length, had been collected from artesian wells and a cave of 4 locallities distributed to the Western Japan. The 3 specimens were newly collected from Kyushu District. The 37mm one was collected from an artesian well in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Pref. The other ones, 56mm and 67mm, were colleted together from the estuary of the River Kagami, Mizuho Mura, Nagaski Pref. It semeed that they came up to land surface with sudterranean water where they lived, and stayed in the estuary. The 6 localities of the blind fish are distributed to level lands near sea of volcanic rock with rich subterranean water. The allied fishes of this blind fish live their lives in coastal zones throughout. These facts suggest that this blind fish orginated in coastal zone and went into subterranean water to seek the dark zone, and reproduced at the zone.
