The prolactin cells of the pituitary of land-locked sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) were examined histologically by transferring the fish from freshwater (8.1mOsm/l;Ca, 0.60mM) to seawater (1031mOsm/l; Ca, 7.32mM), calcium-deficient seawater (975mOsm/l; Ca, 0.02mM) and distilled water. The prolactin cells found active in freshwater fish were inactivated after transfer to seawater and showed a greater accumulation of secretory granules in the cells. On the other hand, the prolactin cells of fish transferred to both calcium-deficient seawater and distilled water showed a similar morphological response, which indicated signs of degranulation. A deficiency of calcium was considered to be a common factor in these two media which caused the degranulation of the prolactin cells.
