• Field experiments with a live male pale grass blue were carried out to further elucidate the role of male odor in male-male interactions. Males possess androconial scales on their wing uppersurface, especially at the basal part of the forewings and at the central part of the hindwings, but not on the wing undersurface. Complete removal of the scales from the male's wing uppersurface increased the number of responses of wild males to its live model. However, the effect of removal of scales on the sexual activity of an approaching male was decreased from the day after emergence. The low responsiveness to a live male may be due to the presence of the androconial scales, and the male odor could have spread from the uppersurface to other parts as the day went by. In fact, the androconial scales were even found on the parts of undersurface of the forewings, where the wings overlapped each other. These observations clearly reveal that the male odor is emitted from the male-specific androconial scales and has the function of suppressing the sexual activity of an approaching male.
