The distribution of three species of crabs in the genus Sesarma hibernating along small valleys in the Southern Izu Peninsula was studied. Sesarma (Holometopus) haematocheir was the most homogeneously distributed. Distribution of S. (H.) dehaani was limited to the bottomland of the lower valleys and to the mouth of small valleys. S. (Sesarma) intermedium showed a distributional pattern intermediate between these two species. Most crabs of S. dehaani hibernated in places less than 1m above the surface of the water while the range of hibernating sites of S. haematocheir extended as far as 100m above the water's surface. S. intermedium was not found beyond 60m above the water level. In conclusion, these three species of crabs, S. dehaani, S. intermedium and S. haematocheir seemed to be dependent on water in that order.
