The induction potency of mesenchymal tissues derived from splanchnic mesoderm of chick, quail and rat embryos was examined experimentally. Allantoic endoderm of bird embryos was cultured either (1) organotypically in combination with mesenchymal tissues from several definite parts of the digestive tract of a 5- or 6-day bird embryo or (2) the recombinants were cultured further on the chorio-allantoic membrane. These mesenchymal tissues were found to be capable of inducing morphological, region-specific cytodifferentiation of the epithelium, a complex morphogenesis similar to the formation of the proventricular glands, and biochemical cytodifferentiation of regionspecific marker enzymes such as pepsin or hormones such as glucagon in an associated allantoic endoderm. If the epithelia derived from the digestive tract of bird embryos are transplanted into various levels of the splanchnic mesoderm or onto the chorio-allantoic membrane after the association with mesenchymal tissues isolated from various parts of the digestive tract, certain epithelia can be influenced by the recombined mesenchyme, while the other epithelia cannot. In the case of prostate differentiation, it is the mesenchyme of the urogenital sinus of rat embryos that exerts its specific influence on the sinus epithelium in eliciting the prostatic buds.
