In order to define the rostral border of the respiratory center, the effects of transections of the rostral medulla oblongata on the activity of the respiratory neurons in the caudal medulla were studied in crucian carp immobilized with gallamine. By transecting the medulla at the level of the rostral border of the facial lobe, the respiratory cycles, the active periods and the spike intervals of both the inspiratory and the expiratory neurons were prolonged. The results suggest that the activity of respiratory neurons in the caudal medulla in continuously enhanced with the influence of a neuronal mechanism situated in the rostral medulla. This mechanism is qualitatively different from the pneumotaxic center (Lumsden, 1923) in terms of enhancement. The rhythmical activity in the respiratory neurons disappeared after transection at the middle level of the facial lobe, and the neuronal activity fluctuated irregularly. The maximum discharge frequency observed during heightened activity was far lower than in the normal respiratory active phases. These results indicate that the rostral border of the respiratory center of the fish is in the medulla from the middle level of the facial lobe to the level of its rostral border.
