Temporal change of mitotic frequency and related change of cell morphology in the epidermis were examined through early larval life of Bombyx mori. During the periods from hatching to the first larval ecdysis, and from the first larval ecdysis to the second larval one, there was a definite pattern of temporal change in mitotic frequency: the number of mitoses increased 1 day after hatch or ecdysis, and then decreased toward the following ecdysis. The population density of epidermal nuclei was lowest 1 day after hatch or ecdysis, presumably as a result of the enlargement of epidermal cells. This suggests that there may be some relationship between the cell enlargement and the occurrence of mitosis. Time associated changes in mitotic frequency were also observed in some other tissues, i.e. tracheal epithelium, fat body and abdominal muscle.
