Under scanning and transmission electron microscopy, the free surface of epidermal cells of the salmon (Oncorhynchus keta Walbaum) exhibited characteristic fingerprint-like microridges which grew systematically during development. In early embryonic stages, microridges were seen near the cell borders. With the progress of developmental stages, microridges grew centripetally from the periphery to the center of the free surface of the epidermal cells. The length of the microridges became longer by elongation of their ends and fusion of microridges. In newly hatched fry, microridges ran parallel to each other. In later fry, microidges fused to each other and consequently, fingerprint-like microridges were formed. For the purpose of a quantitative expression of microridges formation, the total length of microridges in one epidermal cell and the cell diameter were measured with scanning electron micrographs. In transmission electron micrographs, it was established that all of microridges contained fine filamentous materials and in early embryonic stages, these fine filamentous materials were found in the presumptive area of microridge formation. It may be considered that the filamentous materials participate as the skeletons of microridges in microridge formation. Mechanisms of microridge formation are discussed and compared with the microridge formation of epidermal cells of mammals.
