Thyroid follicular cells of normal control larvae contained the roughsurfaced endoplasmic reticulum (rER) of the vesicular form, small electron-dense granules and large vacuoles with homogeneous contents. Follicular cells of animals treated with PTU for 6 months differed from those of the control animals in several points. In the treated animals, the cells contained highly dilated rER and the number of electron-dense granules and homogeneous vacuoles was increased. Microvilli, protruding from apices of the cells, increased in number and were elongated. In contrast, prolonged treatment (9 months) with PTU decreased the number of the dense granules and homogeneous vacuoles. Furthermore, prolonged treatment with PTU induced loss of rER and a reduction in number of the other cell oganelles.
