Female newts Cynops pyrrhogaster were collected from early November to early April and refrigerated at 8-10℃. Oviposition was induced by subcutaneous injections of human chorionic gonadotropin at variable times from November to August. Newts were injected once (single-injection) or twice (doubleinjection) with dosages of gonadotropin from 10 to 100 IU, and egg production was compared. The total number of eggs laid by one female was constant regardless of hormone dosages. However, the doubleinjected group produced 3 times as many eggs (40 eggs/adult) as the single-injected group. Duration of oviposition continued for 3 days, from 4 to 6 days after injection, in both groups of newts. The day of maximal oviposition was brought forward by increasing the hormone dose. Oviposition could be induced even at a temperature as low as 10℃, though the onset and also the day of maximal oviposition were delayed as the temperature was lowered.
