The effects of abc-AMP, 5'-AMP, and theophylline on pigment dispersion of goldfish erythrophores in cultures were in vestigated. Both 1mM abc-AMP and 10mM theophylline caused pigment dispersion in the erythrophores as well as an increase in cytoplasmic volume and the formation of highly dendritic networks of pigment cells. 5'-AMP also caused pigment dispersion. However, the effect was quickly followed by spontaneous reaggregation.
