An improved method is described for extirpating the thymus from Xenopus laevis larvae at stage 45 (4 days old), where no lymphoid differentiation exists. By this technique, thymusless larvae of advanced stage (stages 56-58) were obtained in 30-48% of the operated animals or 47-69% of the survivors. They completed metamorphosis normally, but a severe depopulation of lymphoid cells was evident in all the lymphoid organs of these thymusless larvae and adults.
