Changes in the distribution of ferruginous compounds were examined histochemically in various tissues of Daphnia in relation to hemoglobin synthesis and breakdown. Contrary to the findings of Smaridge (1956), ferrous iron was not detected in any tissue of these animals. In hemoglobin-synthesizing animals, determined by colour index method (Hb-index), ferruginous compounds were observed only in the gut caeca. During hemoglobin breakdown, however, fat cells and shell glands also contained ferruginous compounds. The positive histochemical reaction observed in these tissues suggested the occurrence of ferritin. Further, by electron microscopy, the existence of ferritin in the cells of the gut caeca was confirmed. It is suggested that the gut caeca act as a reservoir of iron for hemoglobin synthesis.
