Intraspecific variations in the parotoid gland secretion of the Japanese Toad, Bufo bufo japonicus, from Kyoto, were examined using paperchromatography. Ethanol extracts were stained and detected with (1) ninhydrin, (2) diazotized p-nitroaniline, (3) phosphomolybdic acid, and (4) Dragendorff's reagent. The chromatographic patterns, except those detected with ninhydrin, were similar, with no significant variation with age or sex. As compared with the patterns obtained by investigators of several North American species belonging to B. americanus species group and B. cognatus species group, the chromatographic pattern of the secretion from B. japonicus is considerably different, possibly indicating phylogenetic divergence.
