Variation of wing indices in Drosophila virilis females was analysed quantitatively in relation to their wing size. Materials were sampled from three natural populations and two experimental cage populations. Isofemale laboratory lines were also examined. In addition to the wing length ad wing width, following five indices were measured for individual flies; costal index or C-index, 4C-index, fourth-vein index or 4V-index, 5X-index and the range of C3-bristles (b/b, Fig.1). In all samples examined, the ratio of wing width to wing length was fairly constant. On the other hand all wing indices were considerablly variable, especially in the samples from natural populations in which extensive variation of body size was found. The degree of variability, expressed in the coefficient of variable, was different among indices. The 5X-index was the most variable and the 4V was the least. These wing indices were apparently affected by both environmental and genetical factors. There were clear correlation between wing length and wing indices. The C-index showed positive correlation with wing length, while the other indices (i. e. 4V, 4C, B and 5X) decreased more or less with the increase in wing length. These relationships between wing indices and wing length were further confirmed by analyzing flies from experimental cultures in larval densities to alter the size of flies. The C-index was the most susceptible to the change in wing length as a measure of body size. The variation of various wing indices in relation to the wing length may be interpreted on the assumption of allometrical growth of the wing.
