The early development of the food eggs in Serpulorbis imbricatus (DUNKER) was studied morphologically and cytologically. It was observed that about 20% of the eggs in each egg capsule developed normally, but the remainder called food eggs degenerated after repeated abnormal cleavages. Almost all the food eggs divided in their first cleavage into 3 to 6 blastomeres of different sizes and, after successive abnormal cleavages without morphogenesis, became masses of smaller blastomeres which later disintegrated and were ingested by veliger larva. In many uncleaved food eggs just before abnormal cleavage, multipolar spindles with 3 to 6 centrosomes were observed in addition to a frequent existence of two polar bodies. These observations suggested that the food eggs of this species failed to undergo normal developmemt after completion of maturation division as a result of multipolar nuclear division and successive abnormal cleavages brought about by some cause which is still undecided although polyspermy is inferred.
