LDH isozyme patterns of cultured cell lines derived from various hamster tissues were examined. Among 14 hamster cell lines tested, nine fibroblast cell lines contained a single M-type isozyme, which seemed to be characteristic of the typical fibroblast cells in culture environment. The other five cell lines contained three or more isozymes. Neither the origin nor the feature of those cell lines was identical: One was a normal diploid fibroblast cell line derived from whole embryonic tissue, two others were epithelial cell lines derived from Adeno type 12 virus infected hamster brain tumors, and the last two were fibroblast cell lines transformed with a treatment with a carcinogenic drug, 4-hydroxyaminoquinoline-N-oxide. The correlation of the LDH isozyme pattern with the cell feature and the malignancy was discussed.
