Autogamy, but no conjugation, was found to occur at intervals in all the stocks of Euplotes woodruffi. As the nuclear process of autogamy, there were noted preliminary division, meiosis, postmeiotic division, syngamy, two postzygotic divisions, and nuclear reorganization (a macronuclear anlage per an exautogamont). Living autogamont sharpened the round posterior end before meiosis, at which time the macronucleus sharply bent its posterior part forward. Spherical macronuclear anlage in living exautogamont was easily observed as a transparent disk in the dark body. Such the anlage was not observed in any living cell which took place no autogamy. Thus, the autogamonts and the non-autogamonts were separated from each other in living condition. One half to one third of cells in several subcultures examined could enter into autogamy under a given culture condition. Two third of the exautogamonts complete the first cell division for growing into the clones, but the other died out. Interautogamous intervals were analyzed by serial isolation lines which were derived from each of 10 exautogamonts. The intervals were about 3 to 4 weeks, during which every exautogamont needed to divide at least 30 times or more for the execution of next autogamy. Excess supply of food to the cultures proved a favorable condition of suppressing the occurrence of autogamy for a long period, while a rapid deprival from the cultures of food was effective in inducing autogamy. There were no cases where any culture retained the conjugating pairs under unmixed or mixed conditions.
