Examination of 180 pellets of Ural owls, Strix uralensis hondoensis (Clark), collected in June and July, 1967-68 at three locations in Niigata Pref., Honshu, indicated predominance of small mammal in the food: 68.2% Microtus montebelli MILNE-EDWARDS, 6.7% Apodemus speciosus TEMMINCK, 0.2% Mus musculus LINNAEUS, 6.9% Rattus norvegicus BERKENHOUT, 1.2% Crocidura dsinezumi TEMMINCK, 2.4% Urotrichus talpoides TEMMINCK, 1.7% Mogera minor KURODA, 0.3% Pipistellus abramus TEMMINCK and 12.2% birds; although the percentage of the species making up the pellets varies somewhat according to the pellets collected at different times and locations. The catch by Ural owls was different from that by trapping in the site nearby: Apodemus speciosus and Urotrichus talpoides were especially scarce in the pellets. Microtus montebelli occurred in the pellets much more frequently than caught by human trappers. All the pellets from Ural owls (n=180) contained an average of 2.3 animals per pellets. However a marked fluctuation was recorded of the pellets collected at different times and locations. Although they were not found in the Ural owl pellets, the following species were recorded in in the study area: Lepus brachyurus TEMMINCK, Sciurus lis TEMMINCK, Petaurista leucogenys TEMMINCK, Apodemus argenteus TEMMINCK, Eothenomys kageus IMAIZUMI and Mustela sibirica PALLAS.
