The regeneration of forelimb in young Xenopus laevis was inhibited by treating the animals with isotonic calcium chloride solution (0.43%) at the time of operation and thereafter. In such animals the blastema cells were small in number, neither glands nor muscle were formed and differentiation of cartilage was abnormal as compared with that of the control animals. Newly differentiated cartilage covered the cut surface and perichondrium of old cartilage, the feature being exactly the same as in Rana sp. whose limbs do not regenerate normally. The toad that had been kept in the experimental solution for three months showed a considerable degree of forelimb regeneration if the animal was washed well in tapwater prior to the operation. These results seem to suggest that this inhibitory effect was not systemic but worked locally.
