The esterases in the liver and kidney of mice, rats and hamsters of several inbred strains were separated by means of acrylamide gel electrophoresis, and their zymograms were compared. In eight strains of mice tested, zymograms of the livers exhibited 11 to 15 bands of the esterase activity, and those of the kidney 10 to 19 bands. The bands were classified into four groups and designated with Roman numerals. Several bands contained in each group were numbered in order of increasing mobility. Thus, bands of mouse liver esterases were designated as I-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, II-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, III-1, 2, IV-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, and those of the kidney esterases as I-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, II-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, III-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and IV-1. Sex differences were observed in II and IV groups in the mouse liver; the activity of band II-1 was stronger in males than in females of MT, DM/Mk and A/He mice, while bands II-2 to 5 and bands II-2 and IV-1 observed in Swiss-albino and dd males, respectively, were missing in females. Similarly, II group esterases of the kidney were more prominent in males than in females in all strains examined. The activities of I group enzymes, I-2, I-4 to 6, were markedly lower in hairless mice than in the other inbred mice. Electrophoretic analyses of hepatic esterases obtained from the F2 hybrids between hairless and Swiss-albino mice, and of those from backcross offspring between F1 hybrid females and hairless males revealed that the activity of I group enzyme was higher in the F2 hybrids than in hairless mice, while that of the backcross offsprings was much lower than in Swiss-albinos. The rat liver esterases were separated into 12 to 15 bands, which were designated as I-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, II-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, III-1, and 2. Comparison of the liver esterase zymograms between Wistar-King A, Fischer 344, Tokyo and Kyoto resulted in that, (1) Wistar-King A was different from the others in that bands II-5 and 6 were missing, (2) Fischer 344 had band I-1, absent in the other atrains, and (3) the activities of I and II group enzymes were different between males and females in each strain. Liver zymograms from two stocks of hamsters, golden and albino, were the same in pattern except the 12th band exhibited a much higher activity in the albino than in the golden hamsters. There was no sex difference in both strains.
