Although considerable studies have been made on the early life of the eels which have their birthplace in the Atlantic Ocean or the Indian Ocean, comparatively little is known about the Japaneses eel, Anguilla japonica TEMMINCK et SCHLEGEL, which is supposed to be spawned in the Pacific Ocean. On the night of February 18, 1966, an elver of Japanese eel was taken in the plankton net, while collecting fish larvae in the surface layer about 300 km off the Chushan Archipelago, China. Locality and other data concerning the capture are as follows: Position 29°-37'N 125°-20'E, Depth 100 m, Time 2003-2013, Wind N 10m, Wave N 3, Water temperature at 0, 48 and 72m layers were 15.5, 15.52 and 15.46℃, and chlorinity of the same layers were 18.99, 19.00 and 19.00‰, respectively. The elver has 116 vertebrae including the two terminal vertebrae which fuse in the process of growth into one. Small scattered melanophores are found at the end of the tail, but not a single melanophore is visible on the snout and the dorsal surface of the brain. Body measurements of the specimen preserved in 70% alcohol are given below: Total length 53.0mm Preanal length 18.8mm Body length 52.0mm Predorsal length 15.3mm Head length 6.0mm Body weight 0.055g On the basis of the distribution of eels around the East China Sea and their vertabral count (EGE, 1939), and similarity in the proportions and pigmentation of this specimen to the elvers of Japanese eel caught in Nagasaki Harbor, it may be concluded that the present specimen is an elver of Japanese eel. It can also be suggested that the eel distributed in the Japan Sea side of Japan passes through the Tsushima Strait as elver on its way to the Japan Sea from its breeding ground.
